Georgina Berens

Georgina Berens (b.1992) is a printmaker and artist living and working in Cape Town. She completed a Bachelor of Arts in Fine Art at Michaelis School of Fine Art, the University of Cape Town in 2016 and received the Matthew Somers Memorial Prize in 2014. In 2017 she completed a residency at the Ratamo Printmaking and Photography Centre in Jyväskylä, Finland. In 2019 she established the South Atlantic Press, where she collaborates with artists on monoprints and etchings.

Berens’ lines are sometimes painstakingly precise, sometimes playful. They are tamed into careful representation and then run wild in gentle swirling abstraction. Like a murmuration of birds, the lines meet and move as one – then scatter and swoop. The subject matter is as elusive and emotional as a Rorschach test. The work reflects upon that moment of interpretive magic while ones eyes adjust to the light or when just on the brink of wakefulness.

"These recent prints articulate a sense of space and the feeling of a comfortable yet temporary dwelling. A swirling darkness floods out into the corners, expressing a darkly indefinable sense of home, somehow unmistakably either there or not.

Details are ambiguous. Whether this space is inviting or terrifying depends on your own sense of safety in a strange place. The sweetness of a candle laid out for the convenience of a guest is reflected in the quiet attention to detail of harmoniously delicate lines. We can almost see the little flame flickering, and the dark shadows on the wall moving with it. The short candle may burn out any second, and the strange, absorbing scene will vanish with it. A reflection in a puddle will let you believe you are home and dry up the next minute." Georgina Berens, 2019

'These prints offer a glimpse into the quiet moments of pause within the city of Cape Town. Working from my own sketches and photographs, I aim to show an insider’s view of the well-documented tourist city. Cape Town is a place of many contrasts and one of these is between severe concrete architecture and picturesque mountains and beaches.

We see this contrast in the lithograph Down The Line, between the forest at the foot of the mountain and the bridge and highway of De Waal Drive. The familiar view is usually glimpsed while passing by either through vehicle window or moving through the city on foot - but is held still here for the viewer to contemplate.

Shadow Passing offers a similar type of contemplation. A figure pauses for a second to view their shadow on a wall. It is a calm and tranquil moment of solitude - perhaps the early morning or evening. A time in-between, a moment of self-reflection." Georgina Berens, 2017.
